Taalstart for status holders in Rotterdam
Taalstart is a new program for status holders who have recently settled in the municipality of Rotterdam. The program consists of a combination of language lessons and workshops focused on self-reliance and serves as preparation for the civic integration process.
The municipality of Rotterdam has set itself the goal of giving Rotterdam's status holders a safe, useful, and at-home feeling, and wants status holders to actively work on their language acquisition and integration as soon as possible after settling in Rotterdam. By offering the Taalstart program even before civic integration, you give status holders the opportunity to take control of their lives and ultimately participate sustainably in society. In this way, status holders are supported in their introduction to Rotterdam and the city's facilities. They also get to know fellow status holders, which makes them feel more supported.
Taalstart is a modular program consisting of workshops and language lessons that prepare participants for life in the Netherlands. Topics covered include: practical matters in Rotterdam, digital skills, civic integration and education, the labor market and opportunities, healthcare, and support and networking.
An important part of the program is mapping out the language level and learning ability of the status holders. In this way, Taalstart contributes to the selection of an appropriate civic integration track.
TopTaal provides both the workshops and the language lessons. The first group has already started. We believe this is a great example of how municipalities are already taking control in preparation for the new civic integration system of 2021.
